About the Artwork

Large Commission Civic Pride Sculpture, Custom Commission Abstract sculpture, Atkin`s selection for this international exhibition was from over 3000 applicants globally: 45 international sculptors were invited to this British Council Tier 2 City (18million people) to make sculptures for this outdoor exhibition.

Atkin was the sole UK Representative.

His sculpture was integral to an urban regeneration scheme organized by Fuzhou Peoples Government and an international strategy to place monumental artworks at significant spaces within the regeneration zone to attract tourist footfall, and business, to a visually stimulating rebuild of this specific District.

To connect his sculpture to the City, “The Silk Road”, referenced Fuzhou as an important port for worldwide trade, past, present-day, and future. The highly polished surfaces of this 5m tall sculpture convey ideas of flowing arcing movements comparable with Tai Chi, an activity evident in parks and practiced by all generations of the Fuzhou community.  Appropriate because his sculpture won an Outstanding Award from the Organizers and is prominently located adjacent to their new Olympic Stadium, host to the First China Youth Games 2015.

Atkin`s earlier EPSRC funded project (Bridging the Gaps) allowed me to digitally explore sports-related athletic movement (the carefully choreographed movement of a Hammer Thrower) using motion capture techniques, and these findings filtered into the formal configuration of my sculpture.

Hepworth, Pevsner, Gabo, and Moore are Modern Art influences; utilizing string to emphasise the tension between the interior and exterior of their artworks, a characteristic evident in Atkin`s sculpture.

Local craftsmen and women were employed to fabricate the sculpture under Large Abstract stainless Steel sculpture,Contemporary Symbolic Steel statue by the so in demand International Sculptor John Atkin whon adds….
“Under my supervision creating work and employment as well as an opportunity for skilled trades to demonstrate their craft to a national and international audience.

*Dissemination of the artwork was via an international outdoor exhibition in Fuzhou: subsequently permanently sited in Fuzhou. Its proximity to the Olympic Stadium guaranteed a new substantial audience attending the China Youth Games. In addition, a catalogue, TV, and Newspaper coverage

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
