About the Artwork

Eye catching Abstract Tall Stainless Steel sculpture, Modern Big Public Civic Pride statue, Sculpted by John Atkin who was Commissioned by Sculpture site Gallery through an invitation-only competition that included artists from the UK, USA and Canada, this sculpture is the focal point of the new Fillmore Plaza, at the heart of San Francisco’s historic centre, Fillmore, (the home of West Coast Jazz).

Atkin worked closely with the commissioning agents, Sculpturesite, and collaborated with AXIS Architects, as well as the San Francisco Mayor’s Office on the newly designed Fillmore Plaza.

Community consultations and children’s workshops formed an integral part of this project, introducing the community to music-related themes germane to the sculpture. Atkin produced a bespoke film that tracked the story of the sculpture and its relevance to the site, which was shown at the Jazz Heritage Centre.

Newspaper, radio and TV helped to raise the visibility of the new project and together with a specially organized jazz concert on the day of the opening, the sculpture and regeneration of the space became a great success.

The forms of this landmark public artwork are based on notions of musical rhythm, much like observing the flow & movement of a conductor’s baton. Additionally, the formal structures of written music, such as “staves” formed part of the design. The granite elements of the sculpture are based on machine head keys, objects intrinsically associated with musical instruments.

A full-scale prototype of the sculpture was constructed in Atkin’s studio, to ensure that the forms and shapes correctly and accurately reflected the scale model he had produced for the client.

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
