About the Artwork

Monumental Marble Contemporary Commissioned Sculpture, Giant Carved Abstract Marble statue by the the Henry Moore sponsored Artist John Atkin, who writes….
“Commissioned by Beijing Municipal Government, via open competition that attracted 2600 applicants worldwide, this award winning sculpture was selected as one of only 26 international monumental artwork’s to be sited in the promenade space adjacent to the world renowned “Birds Nest Stadium”, to celebrate the cultural arm of the 2008 Olympiad.

The concept for the sculpture is based on notions of reconciliation. The two separate parts of the sculpture are hewn from the same block of marble and each shape is based on a garment template form that alludes to ideas of human identity. The two parts of the sculpture are split along an undulating seam, and one part of the sculpture is erect, the other supine, disguising the fact their origins are the same.

The sculpture also references Wilfred Owen’s WW1 poem of the same name and particularly a part of the poem where the victim is confronted by the spectre of the soldier that killed him the day before.

“ I am the enemy you killed, my friend. I knew you in this dark: for so you frowned Yesterday through me as you jabbed and killed. I parried; but my hands were loath and cold. Let us sleep now…`”

Atkin produced a scale model of the sculpture in his studio. Enlargement was executed by FX Stone. Whilst working in China, Atkin was able to oversee the scaling-up and carving process through to the completed artwork. Marble and granite are maintenance free and the logistics of the 27-ton sculpture were coordinated through the expertise of FX Stone, to the precise legislative requirements of Beijing Municipal Government.

Rewarded with an Outstanding Award from the Organizing Committee of the 2008 Olympiad, this landmark project remains in place, in Olympic Park to this day.

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
