About the Artwork

Ama Menec writes; “This life sized, (if a Goddess can be life sized), Nile Goddess comes from the days before the Pharos, before hieroglyphs, and so we do not know her name. This figure was often painted onto pots, floating above boats, and found in graves along the River Nile, particularly in the Naqada region. Sometimes these sculptures would have the wavy lines painted on symbolising the river Nile, and these would then have boats painted on top. That she was found in graves, with no other gods, and no organised religion at the time, suggests she is where the regenerative gods began, as the Nile was the most powerful force around, renewing life every year when it floods. This sculpture took two years to make and has crystals within the glaze that makes her body glitter like a river when the sun is strong. When it rains, she goes all dark and broody, just as a river does when it rains. These were made originally in earthenware clay around 4,000 BCE.”

This is a beautiful, elegant and thoughtful piece which anyone would be lucky to have, created by a masterful sculptress.

Artist Comment

The only time I saw these Neolithic Goddesses `in the flesh` was in the British Museum in the early 1980`s. I knew there was something powerful in there as the air was fizzing as I walked into the room. It was summer and the room was crowded. As I turned from looking in a glass cabinet the people in front of me parted and there stood a row of these Goddesses. They delivered such a powerful kick to my stomach I reeled backwards into the glass cabinet, totally winded. When I recovered I went to study them, and despite being so old, and kilns being very basic in those days, they were totally perfect, without a crack or blemish among them. I also make smaller versions of these and the best compliment I ever got was from a woman who spent an age trying to decide between a small Nile goddess and a Cycladic Goddess. In the end she decided to take the Nile Goddess as she said, "I can feel a kick here", and she patted her middle. This made me particularly happy as the `new age` scene has abstracted these figures to death, and now they are very pretty but have no power at all. The Nile Goddess represents the life giving power of the river Nile; and I was so pleased I`d managed to capture this in my sculpture.

  • The ArtParkS Guarantee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the artists themselves, stating the material they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors, they have a guarantee of 10 years, subject to the effects of weathering, which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them regular cleaning and maintenance.

For instance, bronze, and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze, will acquire a green patina, usually rather sought after. All can attract moss, lichen, and a greenish pollen, especially under trees, which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing-up liquid.

Iron and steel will oxidise (rust), and this falls outside our guarantee.

Organic material like wood and bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited. You should discuss any guarantee directly with the artist, as this too falls outside our guarantee.
