About the Artwork

Naked Gaia Bronze statuette,by Teresa Wells, who writes…
“In Greek mythology Gaia is the embodiment of the earth, and one of the first Greek Gods or Goddesses born from the void of chaos, she is the ancestral mother of all life.

Inspired by the question ‘How do Humans Behave?’, and in particular man’s survival over adversity, Teresa Wells MRSS conceived the bronze ‘Gaia’, 2018.

At 1:6 human scale with a cupric and ferric patina, mounted on a granite base, Teresa draws inspiration from material metaphors, and the contours of dancers to illustrate physical strength, combining the classical ballet pose of Cambre en Arriere with the Vaganova hand position, to symbolically create a powerful and spiritual reference to man’s existence on earth.

Artist Comment

Teresa Wells MRSS creates emotive figurative sculptures in bronze, that celebrate man’s physical and emotional survival over adversity. Inspired by the question “How do Humans Behave?” she draws inspiration from the contours of athletes and ballet dancers to emphasise a physical strength, placing them in precarious poses to stress fragility. She employs an illustrative style that pertains to theatrical gesturing, with particular attention made in re-creating detail in the face, hands and feet. This creates a powerful and spiritual force, producing reflection on one’s own psyche. When combined with geometric architectural supports, in steel, bronze and stone, she shows a contemporary approach to bronze, lifting it off the plinth and making it appear less monumental and traditional. Teresa is a multi award winning member of The Royal Society of Sculptors, and is available for public and private commissions, interiors, landscape and garden sculpture.

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
