About the Artwork

Abstract Standing Simple Garden statue, for Outdoors Outside in the Garden or Yard by Simon Hempsell.

He first became aware of Samarkand whilst on holiday in Estonia. On the bookshelf in the house was was an old soviet era book on ancient buildings of the Mongul / Persian influenced areas of the former Soviet Union. Couldn’t read a word but the photos of the buildings amazed him, never knowing that anything like it existed in this part of the world.

The basic concept for the piece has been his sketchbook for a while but Simon felt it needed something to give it a lift. The photos of Samarkand sparked an interest in the mosaic patterns of Persia, being very structured in layout they appealed to his graphics background with designs based on a formal grid layout.

The sculpture consist’s of two interlocking pieces to form a self supporting cross shape. The first piece has been created thick 10mm steel to give to substance and is being allowed to rust naturally forming a richly colored patina.

The sculpture can be made in a variety of materials, a bronze version which develops a rich turquoise patina with the inner surfaces of the pattern treated with gold leaf look quite stunning and would truly reflect the vibrant colors of Persia.

Artist Comment

I was lucky enough to travel Uzbekistan and Samarkand at the end of 2018. The historic buildings were simply amazing. I loved the rich turquoise colors used for the roof tiles and mosaics. I am currently looking at options to create the sculpture with a turquoise and gold patina to reflect these colors.

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
