About the Artwork

This project was carried out in situ at Fingals Hotel in Devon in 2010. The sculpture by
Bridget McCrum RWA FRBS was carved in Sanbdstone and was showing blisters in the stone with areas cracking off the surface caused by the harsh winter of 2010 where temperatures got below -15C. The project was initially to replace the statue in cast stone. Once the mould had been taken the brief was upgraded to cast the statue in bronze instead.

Artist Comment

After having repaired the surface of the sculpture, I took a 17 part piece mould of the original. This traditional moulding technique is almost a lost art and took over 4 x 12 hour working days to complete using 10 bags of plaster. Over 1/2 a day was spent on the original design for the complex mould. The video shows the moment of truth when the mould was finally opened. I can say I didnt sleep well the night before, hoping it would split open easily, but from the video you can see how easily it opens and that my calculations must have been perfect!

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
