About the Artwork

Elephant statues made from rammed earth 65cm high 2014-15 Dominic Snow was a pioneer in developing rammed earth as a sculpture medium.

Artist Comment

These were produced with the idea of demonstrating that rammed earth can be used to create sculptural forms with the idea of producing a very large rammed earth sculpture or even building, shaped like a stylised elephant but made of rammed earth. Rammed earth is one of the most ancient construction techniques and was widely used in Spain under the Moors to build their castles and in China for sections of the Great Wall of China. It has outstanding environmental credentials as a building material. With the consulting expertise of Expedition, the engineering company responsible for the Millennium Bridge in London and the London Cable Car it was proposed to the re-developers of the Elephant and Castle to have a giant elephant as a central point with a visitor centre on top in the `castle` part. It would be have been made of all the spoil from the main construction sites. Unfortunately the developers decided against having a large elephant at the Elephant and Castle so the project paused there. In the meantime a bunch of these elephants were made out of earth mixed with the varying colours of London clays and a few added earth pigments. I can take commissions for 65cm high rammed earth elephants. I would be happy to consider making a smaller scaled up rammed earth elephant about 2-3 metres high if anyone were to commission one for public open spaces.

  • The ArtParkS Guarantee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the artists themselves, stating the material they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors, they have a guarantee of 10 years, subject to the effects of weathering, which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them regular cleaning and maintenance.

For instance, bronze, and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze, will acquire a green patina, usually rather sought after. All can attract moss, lichen, and a greenish pollen, especially under trees, which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing-up liquid.

Iron and steel will oxidise (rust), and this falls outside our guarantee.

Organic material like wood and bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited. You should discuss any guarantee directly with the artist, as this too falls outside our guarantee.

  • How Does ArtParkS Ensure Your Protection?

From the moment you place an order and pay ArtParkS, you are protected because half of the payment is immediately used to pay the artist’s deposit, while the other half is retained until the sculpture is delivered safely.

Insurance in transit should be arranged with the artist prior to ordering.

  • Why Choose ArtParkS for Your Purchase?
