The Germany Ambassador’s speech during the inauguration

Dear Representatives of the Art Institutions of Zambia,

Colleagues,

Members of the Press,

Friends of the Fine Arts in Germany and Zambia!

In the last rainy season, a storm hit on a weekend and created a lot of damage around the Embassy. The main victim was a beautiful old tree that had so far hidden part of the look at the not so beautiful German Embassy building from the street.

At the beginning of the next week the tree stem looked reproachfully at us and we had an idea: Why pay to have the tree removed, have a hole in the ground afterwards and have to replant a little tree that will take a long time to grow, if one could also use the existing remains in order to create a work of art?

So we approached one of the leading Zambian sculptors, Charles Chambata, with the help of Marc van Wesemael, the husband of one of our EU-colleagues and a great sponsor of artists and art collector. We left it totally to Charles to decide what he wanted to make out of this tree – and while we had expected a carving, he surprised us by leaving the tree stem untouched, thus keeping it as a symbol of nature. He added some figures coming out of this tree, modern men and women who while respecting nature want to build a prosperous democratic Zambia. Germany has proved in our long cooperation with Zambia since independence that as a true friend we have contributed in a lot of fields to this development, and so this tree sculpture is also a symbol of this trustful and friendly partnership.

As you can also see something has been happening to our tree which was said to be dead: It was so proud of being a piece of art now that it started to develop new leaves.

I will soon be leaving Zambia after 4 years and I am glad to yet be able to participate in this event. I would like to thank the sponsors that have helped us to make this happen and I would now like to ask Mr. Chafilwa, one of Zambia`s outstanding painters who by the way will show some of his works of art in Germany from November 2009, to introduce our artist Charles Chambata to you.

Thank you for your attention.

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
