About the Artwork

When Nick undertook this commission He had to make sure the image presented to the committee showed a pictorial representation of one of the youngest of the victims to have perished in this tragedy. The whole process of finding the right image to eventually carve in bas-relief was painstaking and drawn out. Once this had been achieved Nicholas had to carve the exact same image that had been agreed upon.

Artist Comment

In May 1815 some 72 men and boys perished due to an infusion of water from an older disused mineshaft into the adjoining shaft being worked at that time resulting in those underground being trapped and suffocating. This tragedy is reasonably well documented as this incident, amongst others, changed the mining legislation of its day. The fact is that these men and boys, some as old as seventy five, the youngest were six yrs old, perished slowly and painfully plus they all must have known they were all as good as dead as rescue details show the hopelessness of the situation... I was angry for them but I didnt want to slide into politics or prejudice so I carved the little lad with a tightly drawn clenched fist; so as to show the world that they`re passing was scary and painful. They ALL died with clenched fists.

  • The ArtParkS Guarantee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the artists themselves, stating the material they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors, they have a guarantee of 10 years, subject to the effects of weathering, which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them regular cleaning and maintenance.

For instance, bronze, and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze, will acquire a green patina, usually rather sought after. All can attract moss, lichen, and a greenish pollen, especially under trees, which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing-up liquid.

Iron and steel will oxidise (rust), and this falls outside our guarantee.

Organic material like wood and bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited. You should discuss any guarantee directly with the artist, as this too falls outside our guarantee.
