About the Artwork

The sculpture is one of two artwork commissioned by Perth & Kinross Council for the Blaigowrie Community Campus.

The artist made several large semi-abstract bronze shapes of oak and elm to create the sculpture to resemble a bird turning directions in flight, echoing the theme of the participatory osprey artwork inside the school garden.

On one hand, the work signifies growth of new life when spring comes, on the other it contains a map of the local area. Upstream is the site of old mills, downstream is the present site for angling and a fish farm. In between lies the campus represented in a small viewfinder on the sculpture.

The artwork incorporates an interactive element to encourage pupils to explore their surroundings with two optical lenses in the sculpture.

“Kirstie Bailey from PKC’s Arts Development Service said: This is a great project. It has been a year in the making and we facilitated discussions with the steering group and enabled them to write an artist brief, interview candidates and select the successful artist.

“The artist the steering group chose, Fanny, has been brilliant. We have two significant pieces for art for the community to enjoy and are delighted with the results. We couldn’t have asked for better.” Blairgowrie Advertiser 15 Nov 2012.

Artist Comment

“For me, an artwork for a public place connects people to the particular area and gives the community a sense of the uniqueness and identity of the place." My process involves researching the history, cultural and natural heritage, past and future usage of the place to establish a creative framework. The artwork will aim to reflect a strong sense of place expressing specific purpose, emotion and meaning.” Fanny Lam Christie

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
