Mediums Used

Stephen Charnock as an artist he explores the relationship between the artwork and its location within the environment. Natural environments may require a sympathetic approach which work in harmony with the landscape, whereas urban or built environments may offer the opportunity for bold highly visible statements.
Inspiration for my work is drawn from an eclectic mix of nature, historical research, and folklore. I work in a wide variety of materials including: steel, ceramics, concrete, mosaics and stone. The potential of each material and unusual combinations of materials is something I am continually developing through public commissions.

I established my practice in 1996, a year after attaining a BA (Hons) in three dimensional design. With grants from the PYBT and Business Link the practice grew and developed. To add to the success I was awarded a travel scholarship from the Winston Churchill Trust in 1998 which enabled me to study at the prestigious Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. Whilst there I developed new techniques for printing onto ceramics and exhibited a body of work in their gallery.
I began to become recognized for my professional approach and innovative artwork, winning commissions from clients such as Railtrack Plc, The GLA, and Manchester City Council to name but a few. Now with over 15 years experience, I have my own fully equipped workshop and studio. I can design and make large scale steel work in house and provides graduate artists with experience and the opportunity to be involved in making public art and develop their own work. To date the practice has successfully produced over 100 commissions for clients throughout the UK.
