Mediums Used
My practice is built around exploring the unusual medium I’ve created for myself: the combination of burlap and Winterstone (cement). I’m only beginning to learn how to wring meaning and expression from the duality of these materials (soft and hard; porous and impermeable; fleeting and permanent).
These humble materials also ensure that the sculptures are affordable, and permit an unprecedented level of audience interaction. This reinforces my philosophy of opening up sculpture to ordinary people and non-traditional settings.
I sculpt unconventionally charismatic people. My intention is to celebrate the courage of these individuals to be resolutely themselves. Such characters are rare and completely unaware that they are, in their own way, iconic. Sculpting ‘outsiders’ is my way of re-inflating the value of being authentically yourself as a buttress against the stultifying effect of our over-branded, conformist society. As with the drive to restore diversity in our ecosystem, an appreciation for resilience — in all its forms — is key to human survival.
Most of my sculptures are life size, figurative, and have a strong narrative thrust. Human-scaled sculptures create an intimacy with viewers; perhaps even palpably force the audience to confront, often for the first time, people who are easy to overlook. My need, and my challenge, is to illustrate that everyone has worth.
