Nicola Beattie
Mediums Used
Nicola Beattie creates contemporary sculpture using traditional materials of wood, stone, and bronze, working on a series of themes. After four years at Art College, specialising in carving large sculptures in wood and stone, she graduated in 1990 with a degree in Sculpture from Wimbledon School of Art, London.
Tall forms carved in wood and stone, much of her current work is inspired by archaeology, castles, and stone monuments native to Wales, where she grew up and has recently returned to live. Her most recent work in wood incorporates a variety of textures depicting the erosion of these castle stone walls as well as more directional carving, depicting the flow of water, another notable influence on her work.
Nicola has exhibited both abroad and throughout the UK; London exhibitions and galleries include: The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The Mall Galleries, The Menier Gallery, Sotheby’s Art Gallery, and Cork Street Gallery Open competitions.
Alongside exhibiting, Nicola has completed a number of contemporary art commissions for both private and corporate clients in the UK.
In 2020, a bronze commission from further afield saw her work installed in Tai Po, Hong Kong, in the recently built ‘Ontolo’ – a new luxury residence by the sea in Tolo harbour, completed in September 2020.
Her work is also held in collections in Germany, Turkey, Poland, Hungary, Greece, Singapore, the Caribbean, the United states and Australia.
In November 2019, Nicola was awarded The Sculpture Prize in the Visual Art Open Awards.
My current work of tall forms, encompassing both smooth and textured surfaces, is inspired by both water and archaeology in a series of stone carvings and four new series of wood sculptures.
Recurring themes and patterns in my work are curves flowing around the form to more defined edges and openings. These edges are either in the form of windows, archways and steps, or gouge chisel marks flowing up, down and around the sculpture to give a rippling flow to the form. .
My focus is on the still presence of sculpture raised up on plinths and the feeling of peace looking at these large silent forms. At the moment I am working on some larger floor-standing sculptures alongside these interior pieces, and think of groups of these tall wood sculptures as havens; an escape for a still moment from the busyness of daily life; somewhere I want to be quietly in the moment and let time stand still. To me, this is the essence of sculpture, and my aim is to create these quiet yet life-filled forms.
