Michael Hipkins was born in 1942 and received his Art education at Blackpool College. He then went to Paris to study painting at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and Academie Julienne and etching and engraving at S.W. Hayter`s Atelier 17. Primarily absorbed by the human figure, he is not so concerned with naturalistic interpretation but rather with truth to materials used. In his stone carving he brings out the quality of the stone, showing different degrees of process from the raw stone to a highly polished finish. The figures emerge from the stone creating unity in form, spirit and movement. The influence of Rodin and Moore is apparent in these two works.
