Helen Slater Stokes gained an M.A. from the Royal College of Art in 1996. Having set up her artistic practice and studio in 1999, exhibiting both nationally and internationally, she went back to the Royal College of Art in 2013 to carry out research, on a part-time basis, into The Optical Perception of Image in Glass. Through this research she completed a PhD by practice, at the Royal College of Art, in 2021.
Helen lectures part-time at University and has presented research papers at numerous conferences. Her work has been selected to be shown at the British Glass Biennale 2017, 2019 and 2022, and is held in the Imagine Museum Collection, Florida. It has been selected by Bullseye Projects to be exhibited in their current touring exhibition around America, gaining a bronze award, and was featured in the Corning Museum’s New Glass Review 41.
By exploiting the medical science of optical perception in conjunction with historic and contemporary illusionary image techniques, my work discusses our notion of ‘Space and Place’ and challenges our spatial perception. Pieces adopt traditional observational drawing techniques to capture perceived depth, in conjunction with contemporary lenticular image and lens technology. My aim is that my work asks questions about the observed three-dimensional nature of an image, whilst considering ‘entry’ & ‘reflection’ as key aspects of cultural and visual interaction with the surface of the pictorial plane.
Conceptually my work combine notions of visual spatial perception with current issues around encroachment, distancing, and proximity. Titles reference a dialogue around health, social inequalities, and overcrowding, by suggesting we consider our perception of space and the space between, as we coexist. Geometric forms analyse the mathematical quantifiable nature of space, devoid of emotion, as theses virtual, almost holographic, time-based spaces animate and change, in harmony with the observer’s movement.
Each piece is created in the tradition of the kiln formed glass studio, but also has synergies with contemporary casting and optical digital lenticular technological.
