Gianfranco Meggiato was born on 26 August 1963 in Venice where he attended the State Institute of Art studying sculpture in stone, bronze, wood and ceramics. Invited at the age of 16 and 21 by the Municipality of Venice, he exhibited three sculptures at the Galleria Comunale Bevilacqua La Masa in Piazza San Marco.In his work, Meggiato looks to the great masters of the 20th century: Brancusi for his search for essentiality, Moore for the internal-external relationship of his motherhood and Calder for the opening of his works to space. The space, in fact, enters the works of Meggiato and the void becomes as important as the fullness.The artist models his sculptures inspired by the biomorphic fabric and the labyrinth, which symbolizes the tortuous path of man aimed at finding himself and revealing his precious inner sphere. Meggiato thus invents the concept of “introsculpture” in which the observer`s gaze is drawn towards the interior of the work, not limited to the external surfaces only. “On a formal level, space and light do not delimit the work, sliding on it as if it were a whole, but penetrate inside, wrapping its networks and tangles and illuminating the central sphere as an ideal point of arrival”.
