Mediums Used

Portland stone, Portand Stone, Delabole Slate,

Originally qualifying as a Stonemason and working in the industry for a number of years, Duncan is now continuing the long tradition of letter carving and stone carving. Specialising in bespoke carving, ranging from lettering, to a wide range of sculptural pieces, carved mainly in Portland stone and slate. Duncan works mainly to commission, working with private clients as well as businesses.

I enjoy the physical nature of stone carving, and the processes involved of revealing the sculpture from inside the block of stone, The carved letter is also an important element in my work, as I find words can be just as expressive as images or shapes.
Living and working on Portland Dorset I draw inspiration from the natural landscape surrounding me.

Biography

My career in Stone carving started by a move to London from the Midlands to study Stone masonry.
The course gave me an excellent grounding, and it was where my passion for carving began.
After qualifying. I moved to the West country and worked in the industry for a number years. Around this time my focus shifted more towards letter cutting and carving, I now work mainly to commission producing a wide range of work.
