… Romhein has still today, after decades of keeping company with sculpture, a relationship of spontaneous and gratifying reciprocity with it. He continues to put his trust in it as if it were the place of his own identity; through it, now that he has reached his maturity, he fulfils the same aspirations that he had as an adolescent in Damascus, when he began to measure himself against the material to be shaped. Sculpture has undoubtedly rewarded him. He can indeed affirm that they have worked together in symbiosis, which has enabled him to express himself in the fullness of the state of grace. A state that has to be earned, of course, for grace is not a free gift! And there are many works where we are aware that the plastic forms have sprung from the artist’s hands as through flowing from a mountain spring; their flow is so natural, even in the extreme rigour of the form, in the impeccable control of the composition”.........
From the critical text of Ivy Mefalopulos:... The pleasure of violating the rational limits of reality is almost always part of the game of art. What differs, however, is the shape in which this pleasure becomes the force of transformation of the dominating rationality. An example of this difference is the work of Syrian sculptor Boutros Romhein which, despite its challenge to classical realism, seems to embody that concept of renewal which, in the “70s, began to set itself against the ultra-modern one of exaggerated avant-garde.” A return to memory, resorting to the cultural past, in an attempt to give artistic creation back its lost inner life…………….…... As the observer’s eye runs over the Syrian artist’s sculpture, the user of the image appears to be able to touch several piano keys, so harmonious is the group of works. Boutros’ creations can be enjoyed from all angles, like perversely polymorphous objects in which it is impossible to find a perspective in which the balance of the figure is lost. Looking at and touching a statue is like a musical experience, like a melodious”......

In 1990 the sculptor Romhein Boutros, opened the doors of his studio to welcome anyone who desired to sculpt. Today, Boutros has years of experience in teaching both the ancient and modern techniques of working in marble, wood, stone and clay. At our workshop, through a direct relationship with the sculptor/teacher, students develop the skills to manage the material technically in order to work out idea thoughts and ideas in the process of becoming a creator of his/her own images. The Studio Arco Arte continues to unroll its mission of training, look at the development step by step a ideal place for meeting, learning, growth and exchange. In the city of Carrara, with its romantic primitivism, you will experience the poetry of time standing still. This is a territory linked historically to mining and marble workmanship, the eternal material that has enriched human civilization and even today retains its undiminished fascination.
