Bernard Miles is a semi figurative sculptor. He attended art school from the age of 13, studying all forms of visual art. He Initially worked as a graphic designer and illustrator, and for the past 30 years has specialised in sculpture and painting.His work is inspired by his relationship with key women in his life, resulting in contemporary images of the female form. His signature style is of flat planes and hard edges, highlighting light and shade, which forms within the flowing lines of his sculptures.

Bernard Miles Statement;
My work evolves from a kernel of an idea, which will change as it develops throughout the clay modelling process. Light and shade has always been a focal point of my work, and how that can be manipulated is key to my work.
I model in terracotta clay or potters buff This is the most important part of the process for me as it allows me to design and develop as the 3D form takes shape. Each angle has to work in its own way and be harmonious with the others. For me, as an aesthetic artist, if the piece does not please the eye, from all aspects, then in my mind it is not successful. Once the clay form is finished to my satisfaction, it is then ready to be moulded and cast.
The first casts are often in plaster as I like to see the result, and if there are imperfections then I work on them by sanding, and polishing. Time spent after moulding can take almost as long as the creative process, depending on the type of cast. I use different materials to cast in – bronze, marble resin or gesmonite.

Influences

The female form and the female in general, have had a great influence on me, whether it is my mother, wife or daughter. These relationships, that link all humans together, can create contrasting, and often conflicting emotions, and these connections makes and shapes us, in many ways, throughout our lives. Perhaps this is why many artists use the female form as a metaphor for life, nature, and creation.
In my work, these images of women are not portraits, ie the features are non-visible, for they represent all women not an individual, though their gender is clear.
