Artist Comment

"Lily" bronze sculpture stands as a powerful tribute to the legacy of Lily Smith, a pioneering figure in the world of open water swimming. Inspired by her remarkable achievements, the sculpture captures the spirit of a young woman who defied the odds and societal expectations in the early 20th century. Before she turned 15, Lily had earned the title of "Champion of all London," showcasing her exceptional talent and determination. Her most daring feats, including swimming for five hours alongside a man attempting to cross the English Channel and competing as the only woman in the 1907 Richmond to Blackfriars race, highlight her courage and perseverance. Lily's story is emblematic of the broader "new woman" movement, where women began breaking free from restrictive roles and asserting their place in traditionally male-dominated arenas. Her accomplishments paved the way for the development of women's sports, demonstrating the power of resilience and challenging the limitations placed on women of her era. Through this sculpture, Lily's contribution to the advancement of women's independence and equality is immortalised, reminding future generations of the enduring impact of her trailblazing spirit.

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
