About the Artwork

This unique piece of black steatite (soapstone) was chosen by M.C.CAROLYN for its amazing color and dense texture on a visit to the Virginia, USA, quarry. The sculptor has used many surface polishes/finishes that give the woman’s head/arm a soft polish and then changes into a high polish on her skirt. Carving tool marks are left for additional textures in her hair and rasp marks in her skirt. As with other sculpture, i.e. “The Thinker” by Rodin, edges have been meticulously given a high polish as if often touched by viewers. This sculpted woman has fallen downward and joins to create a new form similar to a tombstone.

Artist Comment

M.C.CAROLYN has caught the moment when this woman first heard of a death. It is as though she is breathless, has collapsed and falls forward. Her skirt of simple planes is defined by her legss. Isamu Noguchi once told me in our ongoing correspondence … that the creation of forms in space are the same regardless of the size of the sculpture. Edges of this sculpture appear to have areas worn smooth by hands touching, consoling her. MCC has patrons tell her that this “Grief” statue should be used as a Memorial.

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
