Artist Comment

The Lions were commissioned by the Highways Agency and I think it was in 2001. The inspiration was very very tenuous but if you look at the building illustrated on Five Ways Corner, you can see a bas relief of a little lion rampant. That was the only thing I found interesting or unique to the site. It’s such a vast area, that to find other ideas from history or geography would have been too wooly. Besides. The concept worked!! The lions are on pillars of stainless steel which are about the same diameter as the street signage. This was to avoid distracting drivers and to allow them to see through the sculpture. I also put them up high to avoid vandalism and avoid the public, especially visually handicapped from bumping into them and suing the council. I also noticed that at that height they looked straight into the windows of the passing school buses. I made two lions and altered the females heads so the seem different. Casting five different would have been too expensive. I modelled them in a tiny disused laundry on a farm in Fife. The picture of one though the window has shades of Aslam!! Sorry the old pictures are very low resolution. The junction about upgrade was to cut down on crashes and fatalities. It was one of the first to use sensors underground to gauge the amount of traffic flowing and to allow the area with the most build up priority. Another reason I wanted to make the lions is pure and simple. I love them! The terrify me!! Have a great time and let me know if you need any more information. Best wishes to all at Oaklodge. David PS Just a thought the title Civic Pride is a pun. When we take part in commissions it often says in the brief that we should try to instil a sense of civic pride in a community. Of course a group of lions is called a pride!! D

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
