About the Artwork

This is a monumental scale recreation of the frieze-work at the ancient Roman city of Aphrodisias in modern-day, southwestern Turkey. The frieze is carved in white Turkish marble while the cornice and architrave are carved in Turkish travertine marble. Please see Artist comments.

Within the region of Denizli, Turkey and located in a fertile valley near the marble quarries of Muğla, Aphrodisias is one of the most fascinating ancient cities in the world. It existed from the 300`s BC until about 640AD when it was largely destroyed by a massive earthquake. It has been under continuous archaeological exploration and restoration since the early 1960`s and this effort has uncovered an enormous amount of extraordinary sculpture and architecture. At the center of the city is a temple for the Greek goddess, Aphrodite, for whom the city was named. There was a school of marble sculpture here that lasted for almost six centuries and during the Pax Romana provided the Roman Empire, from this area to as far away as Britain, with beautiful marble sculpture. This is a city that was dedicated to Love and Art. One of the more common features of the combination of sculpture and architecture in Aprhrodisias were the entamblatures that contained friezes with portraits of local people, mythological characters and pure fantasy. My sculpture is intended to honor that tradition and at the same time create a monument for a new school of sculpture in Turkey, the Aegean Stone Sculpture Academy. This sculpture is twice life-size, or twice the scale of the Aphrodisias entamblatures. The portraits are of Mr. Nihat Kömürcoüğlü and myself, the two founders of this new school of sculpture, inspired by the ancient school at Aphrodisias.

  • The ArtParkS Guarentee

All the sculptures on the website are described by the Artists themselves stating the materiel they are made from and their dimensions. If they are stated to be suitable for outdoors they have a guarentee of 10 years subject to the effects of weathering which will alter their colour and finish over the years unless you give them  regular cleaning and maintenance. For instance Bronze and to a lesser extent bronze resin/cold cast bronze will aquire a green patina, usually rather sought after and all could attract moss  lichen and a greeny pollen especially under trees which should be removed regularly with warm water and washing up liquid.
Iron and steel will oxidise(rust ) and this falls outside our guarentee.
Organic materiel like wood, bark willow is variable and depends to a great extent on where it is sited and you should discuss any guarentee direct with the Artist as this too falls outside our Guarentee.
