Zeljko Ivankovic`s Personal Statement
“I am a sculptor predominantly working in stone and metal but I also paint and draw when the need arises. When working with stone I tend to make figurative pieces, human or animal and I tend to let the stone lead the way. What I mean is I draw the inspiration from the particular lump of rock and in a sense release the image I can see within it. Working with metal is very different as I have a more deliberate and focused approach. Metal also lends itself well to making larger structures and allows me to develop more ambitious ideas for outdoor or garden sculptures.

As of 1st January 2006 I became a full time artist. For the most part of my career I have been working mostly to commissions as well as working steadily to complete a body of work that I can show. I also make large outdoor sculptures and smaller, indoor pieces.

I am known to almost everybody as Jericho because lots of people find my real name difficult to pronounce.

A lot of my work so far has been commissioned by small companies, galleries and individuals who saw work at exhibitions as well as from friends and family. Regardless of the relation, the nature of any commission is such that my creativity is influenced and galvanised by what others want ? making site specific and involved pieces influenced by surroundings and personalities. This interaction invariably produces exciting and innovative results through the use of unexpected or less familiar materials and methods. It gets me out of my ?comfort zone? and I learn new skills and techniques. Commissions can, for the same reason, be challenging but I also love the research, investigation and negotiations needed for a successful piece of work. It also makes me produce more substantial and ambitious pieces.

When it comes to working for ?myself? things seem to work very differently. My work is generally informed by what is around me in terms of material as well as my surroundings. I never seem to need to ?look for inspiration? and for a good number of pieces I simply waited for a piece of stone to tell me what it wants to be. It may sound a little strange but I find that this is the case particularly with carving. Once I see an object ? either a figure or animal ? within the form it is easy to carve around it to expose its surface. Some people are naturally more inclined to carving ? ?taking away? and I do love working that way but I also enjoy making objects ? by adding or ?putting on?- Two very different approaches to sculpture, both equally important and valid.”.
