Born in 1980 in Mâcon, France, Stéphane Desmaris lives and works in France (Paris, Bâgé-la-Ville) and Italy (Tuscany). He was introduced to the path towards art creation when studying psychoanalysis in Dijon and Lyon. Then he began to realize himself as an artist through scuplture.
During the first years he created and showed a set of figurative sculptures made of vine stock (the Cippus series) centered around the theme of the human body.
More recently his art broadened out: his wooden scupltures got monumental and totem-like (the Tantique series) and he discovered clay work, a whole new world to explore!
New material… new shapes… With clay his work made a turn toward abstraction. His first ceramic works (the Nodulus series) came out in 2016. The choice of the wording Nodulus to name this series is not trivial: it belongs both to the mineral and the organic semantic fields and means « little knots ». Then new developments appear, like the Botrus series, which gives prominence to oenology and, more widely, gastronomy, subjects the artist holds dear. This contrasts with the Geometria series, made of sculptures evoking unlikely architectures. And then there is the the Sinus series which concerns the object of desire in a freudian sense.
In the spring 2017, Stephane Desmaris further develops his works through monumental sculptures (the Steel Nodulus series) made of steel hooks used in the production of casks.
