Mediums Used
Peter M. Clarke has exhibited his imaginative organic sculpture in innumerable outdoor and indoor exhibitions throughout Britain since graduating from Camberwell College, London, in 1993. The majority of his work is in copper and steel.
His work has been purchased for collections in the UK, Europe, the US, Australia and New Zealand, such is the interest in his unearthly depictions of flora which blend in so well in garden settings, as exampled in BBC Gardener`s World, The FT, Sunday Express colour supplements etc.
I look to the organic for form, colour and texture, exploring the characteristics of plant forms, of rocks and shells, of the earth, of the universe.

Born in London, Peter spent years in the fashion industry before deciding to make a career change and study art and design. First he embarked on a foundation course at Sir John Cass College, London, followed by a degree course at Camberwell College of Art, London. While there, an invitation to create 3 sculptures for a school`s sensory garden ignited his passion for designing and making metal garden sculpture.
Peter`s studio/workshop is located in a converted stable block on a farm in Kent, surrounded by horses, hens and peacocks. Working with metals and especially copper because of its sensitivity to the texturing process, his pieces are made by hand, usually by drawing freehand directly onto the metal. Cut shapes are heated to a temperature where the material is malleable and can be textured and hammered into shape.
The inspiration for Peter`s work comes from nature, and many of his textures and finishes are derived from organic surfaces of stem, leaf, pod, shell or bark. Generally suitable for siting in soil, and some even in water, many of Peter`s outdoor pieces are finely balanced to allow for gentle movement as they sway in the wind.
The beautiful forms and textures to be found in nature, especially in organic surfaces such as stems, leaves, feathers, pods, shells and bark.
