I came to sculpture almost by accident but found myself instinctively drawn to representing the human body in 3 dimensions. I have been totally absorbed with it ever since, learning under the tutelage of Beatrice Hoffman and taking much of my inspiration from the great modernist sculptures such as Hepworth, Archipenko, Brancusi, Picasso with their simplicity of form, reducing the figure to its true essence to reveal something almost hidden. For me, the challenge is to see beyond the details of the human figure in order to capture pure emotion.

Having spent many years enjoying life drawing, I came to sculpture almost by accident, but found myself instinctively drawn to representing the human body in 3 dimensions. I am influenced by the modernist sculptors; Hepworth, Archipenko, Brancusi, Picasso with their simplicity of form, reducing the figure to its true essence to reveal something almost hidden. The challenge is to see beyond the details of the human figure in order to capture pure emotion.
I work in a combination of modelling and carving to create figures that express a tension and strength of emotion through postures that depend upon folded, overlapping, interlocking limbs suggesting intense introspection, reflection and a self-nurturing quality.
