Mediums Used
When Nicola began stone carving in 2009, she discovered a passion. Stone is an incredible and exciting medium which drives her to discover its possibilities.
Originally inspired by sculptors Rodin, Modigliani and Brancusi to name a few, her interests in yoga, meditation and spirituality impress upon the visions and meanings in her work. She is currently experimenting with crystals and fossils embedded in her pieces.
Stone is a sensuous medium to work in, its solidity and density formed over millions of years make me feel connected to the Earth. The patience and hard work to shape stone make it all the more satisfying to carve.
The rhythmic process of carving stone is meditative, it slows everything down allowing the depths of the subconscious to emerge. My work is inspired by my life, relationships and understanding that we are spiritual beings having a human experience, creativity of any kind opens the door to the exploration of the self.

Many hours of my childhood were spent wrapped up in creative projects, something I felt impelled to do, but didn`t take seriously or pursue in my adult life.
I revisited that childhood state of wonder, imagination and creativity after having my own children and realized how essential it was to my being.
I began stone carving in 2009, after attending an evening class in sculpture. Followed up with further classes, I had discovered a new medium, a passion for carving and a feeling of deep fulfillment. I turned my garage into a workshop and have sold pieces in several local exhibitions, I have produced work for private commissions in Devon, Bristol and London.
Much of my work is figurative, my interest in yoga and meditation inspires my work, as do my relationships and family.
I have started to use fossils and gemstones in my pieces to contrast energy and the solid form.
I am a member of the Sculptworks cooperative, we are a group of five stone carvers, who exhibit our work and demonstrate stone carving.
Rodin, Modigliani, Brancusi, Michelangelo, Ancient Greek sculpture, Buddhist sculpture.
Yoga, Spirituality.
