After leaving The Berkshire College of Art Martin trained at the Natural History Museum, producing a sculpture of a blue whale and calf which remains on display to this day. Moving to the National Museum of Denmark he worked with some of Europe’s greatest wildlife artists, visiting China in 2007 to study that country’s influence on bronze casting. Martin has also been resident artist at the International Nature in Art Museum, Gloucestershire.
Martin is guided by an enduring love of nature and a unique understanding of animal physiology. The result is a sculptural equivalent of impressionism: a simplicity of form and sensitivity to materials that creates an ageless and contemporary beauty.
My overriding passion is form. Working in all media to create art that has fluidity and purity of line. I am fascinated by primitive visceral interpretations of the natural world and man’s relationship with nature in the modern day. My influences from ancient civilization have led me to abstract and invent new ideas that include the viewer on subjects of vulnerability, freedom and relationships. Through new discoveries of artistic methods, I have begun working in materials such as copper and glass – areas that I wish to expand on and exhibit to the wider public.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Forest is ancient house hidden behind a secret walled garden. Here Martin lives, in a stone building originally built as a safe house for Henry I.
When Martin Hayward-Harris bought it 3 years ago, its only mod cons were cold water taps in the kitchen and an old tin bath that stood in the corner of what is now sitting room.
Martin Hayward-Harris has an acute almost obsessive sense of the natural world. My parent s often sent me to an uncles farm during the school holidays where I would draw and rub shoulders with all sorts of animals. I loved being in the countryside and so close to nature and I recognized that my art was the most important thing to me.
After he left college Martin worked for a time at the Shepperton film studios. I was there for a year and a half. It was fantastic. I made some amazing sculptures in all sorts of materials for various films and TV programmes.
