Mediums Used
Gill Wicks is highly skilled in using material to upcycle or recycle into a stunning work of art. It takes a certain skill to see beauty, or rather potential beauty in what others would just reject, and work it up into a sculpture to treasure.
Current work focuses attention upon the relationship, and tensions between the natural and man-made worlds. It celebrates the possibility of harmonious co-existence between these two elements. Use of re-claimed materials, and evidence or scars from previous life, are celebrated and given status.

Whilst studying for a BA Hons in fashion at Newcastle, Gill`s work was strongly influenced by the sculptural qualities of Japanese designers. Having been drawn to 3 dimensional work from an early age, it was inevitable that avenues of expression would diversify, exploring a widening range of materials. I am fundamentally a designer, I hope that something in my work may move you or connect with you, but it is for others to decide whether I am an artist or not.
Working mostly in metal and wood or up-cycled materials, Gill`s designs often take shape through a `pattern making` process, a skill developed during her design career. Gill`s work reflects her love of nature and natural forms, a fascination with the consequences of time and the elements upon materials. More recent pieces have been influenced by current tensions between the natural and man made worlds, and the ongoing struggle to build a more harmonious existence between the two.
