Biography

Christine Lee lives in Devon, where she have her studio. Her best known work is the remarkable 16 foot high fountain which stands in front of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. This was inaugurated by the Queen in 1996.

She gained a BA degree at St. Martins School of Art in London, and then studied drawing and painting with Cecil Collins. This training brings together the classical discipline of a reowned school of sculpture with the philosophical vision of a great English master.

Her mature work has an unusual, even extraordinary integrity. In terms of relationships between structures and spaces, planes and vloumes, angles and curves, textures and light, there is a sense of daring originality, resulting in a boldness and a gusto in everything she touches.

She is happy working in many and varied materials, which both occupy and harmonise with the spaces they inhabit. She shows a huge generosity of spirit, a love of people, and of nature, and a delight in the whole physical creation.

The generosity is the core of her vision. There is a sense of joyfulness and piose which appears utterly effortless. Her sculptures, grounded yet soaring, allow everyone to feel, if only for a moment, a sence of miracle and wonder.
